Episode #5 - Spotted - This Week in Healthcare

It's time for the healthcare weekly round-up 🤝

📌 Welcome to Edition #5 of "Spotted! - This Week in Healthcare", and I'm your host: Vivek Nanda.

So, here we go..
--
The US healthcare system has become something of a Frankenstein monster.

Price transparency, affordability, innovation and competitive entrepreneurship have all gotten worse, not better. And the healthcare beast has grown to take over more than 17% of our GDP.

Dr.
Robert Mittendorff, shared a very interesting post citing some fascinating facts.

In his own words -
The reality is, in fact, in plain view if you look: administrators have grown 3200% while physicians have grown 200% over the last two decades; physician compensation is down, net of inflation. Admin comp is up, way up.

Now this begs the question - Have we become an over-regulated industry?

Because the more an industry becomes regulated, the more administrators are required to enforce the regulations.

Dr.
Andy Moye, who draws an interesting parallel between technology adoption in the US health system and music.

According to him, in order for hospitals and health systems to fully embrace new healthcare technologies, they must excel in three key areas or they must amp these 3 dials -
+ Clinical Efficacy
+ Adaptability with Current Workflows
+ And Economic impact

This next post is on "AI Voice Agents" by
Olivia Moore who is AI Apps Partner and Anish Acharya who is General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz.

Their thesis is -
Phone calls are an API to the world — and AI takes this to the next level!

A new era of phone calls is upon us. No human will have to make a call again thanks to genAI. The only time humans spend on the phone is when it is really valuable.

Now imagine how it might affect the healthcare industry ->

Last but not the least, we have -
BrainSpace

There are many sources of dangerous brain pressure: from brain bleeds at birth, to chronic diseases, to TBI and even strokes and dementia. In each case, the urgent treatment is to protect the brain by managing brain pressure (ICP). Existing string-level options used in top hospitals today are high risk, labor intensive and missing key information.

BrainSpace is building automated, connected devices that protect the brain and help it heal. Check them out!

And that's a wrap!

Tune in next week for more buzz from the health-tech world.
Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!
